If we were able to view the sense of self in a similar way, we would be able to glimpse also the external deconstruction and reconstruction of the sense of self in ever-moving, sequential, and beautiful patterns of unfolding. Kathleen Dowling Singh http://www.soundenergyhealing.com Of Healing and Compassion By Diane Mandle I share my story with you as a reminder of the true foundation of healing: Diane goes to the Dentist I arrived at the dentist with my tooth already in pain from a partial root canal started but not finished the week before. The entire side of my face ached from repeated episodes of excruciating pain every time something touched my tooth. Everyone at the spotless dental office was friendly and efficient and I was in “the chair” quickly. The dental surgeon told me that it was normal for me to have pain because part of my nerve had been left in but would now be removed. With my mouth wrenched open with a rubber bridge for the next one and one half hours, she proceeded to extract the remaining nerve with efficient skill. My jaw ached mercilessly while I watched her manuver a variety of threatening pointed objects into my mouth. At one point a burning needle, still smoking descended into my mouth as I tried to control the panic. I visualized a lotus flower floating on a slow moving river and taking all stress and fear with it. I slowed my breathing and disappeared into a deep meditation where my jaw no longer existed and I could release my physical pain. I came out of the meditation a few minutes before the surgery was complete. The doctor and assistant were busily chatting about parties, fashion and singing along to the annoying songs on the radio, above my head. Tears began to stream down my face. They didn’t seem to notice and if they did they didn’t react in any manner. It was as if I was not even there. The only thing that existed was the hole in my face and things they were chatting happily about. Not once during the entire procedure did they use my name, ask how I was doing, touch my arm or in any way offer a comforting or empathetic word or deed. In fact, despite their technical expertise, it seemed as if they had forgotten totally that their client was a human being, subject to fear, anxiety, anticipation and pain and not just a decayed tooth. It was for this that the tears came. Not for pain but for their total lack of awareness and compassion. I though of how easy it would have been for them to put me at my ease, to make the entire ordeal more comfortable-and how much more satisfaction they could experience. I imagined myself holding the hand of imaginary patients as they started to experience fear just before a procedure. I thought of how many people came and left medical or dental offices who were treated as sickness rather than people. I thought that these nice, professionals had lost their humanity and my heart ached long after my teeth were repaired. What does this have to do with sound healing? Just this: As healers it is our duty to engage with and hold the whole person, which includes the physical, spiritual and emotional, in our vision. One small phrase, one light touch makes a world of difference to a client. What for us may seem routine, may be a completly new and frightening experience for a client. The creation of an atmosphere that brings comfort through colors, sound (please turn off that radio) and smell is vital. We must stay vigilant against a myopic view where the illness or condition makes us lose sight of the whole. When we do, we lose our humanity, our compassion and I believe, our greatest healing potential. Sound Healing Tip Sometimes your bowl may produce a great deal of "chatter" when you sing it. One helpful way of keeping the chatter to a minimum is to put water in the bowl. The water will absorb some of the chatter and produce a more consistant tone.
