A Word on Toning: Toning is a practice that can create powerful transformation. We all have tones or sounds that emerge from us naturally to express feelings. These are tones that release pain, provide relief and restore the natural flow of energy to our bodies creating a therapeutic and restorative effect on our body/mind. Since the human body is made up of 70% water which is a highly successful transmitter, toning followed by playing the Tibetan bowls directly on the body enhances has a profound effect on the nervous system and our whole body. The practice of toning can be as simple as identifying the sounds we make naturally to express emotions and to repeat them with clear intention for several minutes each (ie ah, oh, etc.) The best way to tone is to exhale a long sustained sound for the duration of your breath while sitting or standing with the spine straight but relaxed. Toning can also entail adopting mantras, or syllables that are known to contain specific vibrations that clear our energy centers (chakras) and calm our minds by repeating them for several minutes several times a day. I am including a few sounds for you to tone with and will expand this list next month. Remember to create a clear intention and hold it as you tone and play your bowl. Sound Healing Tip If you want to get different tones from your bowls, consider using hardwood sticks of different weights and coverings. Sticks wrapped in leather and used to sing the bowls will produce low tones and lots of vibration. The same bowl sung with a heavier hardwood stick will bring out the upper tones. If your bowl won't sing, change the stick. Often this makes all the difference in the world. It is good to have a variety.
