Gong Gong Gong More and more, people are being awakened by the sound of the gong although they have been around for centuries. Gongs are powerful in creating an energetic flush of the system, and dramatic in how they effect us. They grab our attention and hold us in their vibration. When the gong is sounded, we are physically connected to the strength and power of its resonance, sympathy and correspondences that can lead us to a state of peace, and both personal and collective attunement. One of the oldest instruments in the world their origins can be traced back to China, but they have played a strong role in many cultures. You can find gongs from Thailand, Bali, Java, Nepal, Japan, Tibet and Africa to name a few. They have been used in traditional religious, ceremonies, in wars, for communication, for healing purposes and in orchestral compositions. Gongs are flat, thin, thick, large, small, nippled, hand hammered, hanging, planetary, symphonic and everything in between. There are hundreds of types to choose from. When heard people, quiver, shake, ripple, laugh, expand, cry, feel fear, joy, and even, (dare I say) orgasm. In concerts, I play a planetary moon gong for its feminine and healing qualities, a wind gong for its shimmering qualities and in private sessions a small Chinese Hung gong because for its smaller size it has impressive multi-dimensional textures. For the Western mind, because the gong is so dramatic, its nature seems more readily assimilated. The gongs strong voices quiet the mind despite us and its energy courses through us in an important manner that cannot be denied. However, my experience is that the subtle Singing Bowls have a more intimate, long term effect on the body/mind. Rather than offer a general cleanse (gong), the power of the bowls is to delicately move and align energy in a more intentional manner. Their quiet and gentle nature calls up different aspects of us and allows more specific focus and intention to come into play. We are more partners with the work of the bowls and their anchoring process requires that we develop deeper listening skills that can serve us in many aspects of our lives. For me, it is like the difference between an alarm clock and intuition: one really gets our attention, and the other is there soft, subtle and powerful in directing our lives but requires us to pay attention. Textures of Sound During the January workshop one of the activities that students really liked was working with just one bowl to call forth a variety of textures from the bowl. Textures were produced as a combination of HOW they were struck and WITH WHAT. Practice with a partner and see if they can determine what texture you are trying to call forth. Here are some ideas: energizing, soothing, aligning, moving, calming, breaking up, anchoring..... Another workshop is being planned in the San Diego area for the 8-10 of June. Participation is limited to 10 so each person can receive a maximum of individual mentoring. Participants will have had to be working with the home study course and keep a detailed log.
